Late goal by Fowler propels Newberry to a 1-0 win over Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, Tenn. - A goal by Amberly Fowler in the 107th minute of play propelled Newberry College to its first win of the year in a 1-0 win over Lincoln Memorial University in NCAA Division II Women's Soccer action Saturday afternoon. The win was the first of the season for the Lady Indians.

Both Lincoln Memorial and Newberry played hard for 90 minutes but regulation was not enough time to decide a winner yet again as the Lady Indians remained tied 0-0 with the Railsplitters heading into overtime. 

With just under four minutes left in the second overtime and Newberry facing yet another tie, Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) was able to break through for her second career goal off a long free kick from Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas). The goal was the freshman's second in three games.   

The Lady Indians' defense played stout all afternoon, holding Lincoln Memorial scoreless throughout the 106 minute match. The Railsplitters outshot Newberry 16-9 in the game, including an astounding 9-2 margin in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net.   

This was the Lady Indians' fourth double overtime game this season and the first in which they were able to pull out a victory. It raises their record to 1-1-3 including a 1-0-3 mark in double overtime matches. The win was also gives the Lady Indians a record of 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Newberry next plays on September 12, when the Lady Indians travel to Due West, S.C., to face off against the Erskine Flying Fleet.
