Newberry falls 3-1 against Division I Charleston Southern for first loss of the season

CHARLESTON - Newberry College lost, 3-1, to Division I Charleston Southern in NCAA women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon. The loss was the Lady Indians' first of the season. 

Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) scored her third goal of the season, but the Newberry offense failed to score more then one goal for the third time in four games. 

Newberry fell behind early when Charleston Southern's Michelle Dennis got behind the Newberry defense and deposited a pass from the midfield into the lower left side of the goal in the just the fourth minute of play.

Woiwode tied the game towards the end of the half when she took a pass from Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska), turned her defender and beat the goalie in the upper net to make the score 1-1.

Newberry out shot Charleston Southern 3-1 and had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks at the half.

In the second half of the game the Lady Bucs took control, scoring just three minutes into the half when Dennis took a pass in the box and beat Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) for her second goal of the game. 

Newberry struggled to put together any offense in the second half as the team was out shot by Charleston Southern 12-1.

The Lady Bucs finished the scoring in the 87th minute when Emma Mattsson scored on a free kick, giving Charleston Southern a 3-1 lead. 

Newberry falls to 0-1-3 on the year and will next travel to Harrogate, Tenn., where the Lady Indians will begin their South Atlantic Conference slate when they face Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, September 8. The game will be a contest between two regionally ranked opponents as Newberry is ranked sixth in the Southeast and Lincoln Memorial is ranked fifth according to the latest adidas/NSCAA Regional poll.
