Newberry gets first SAC win of the year with 1-0 victory over Mars Hill

Box Score

MARS HILL, N.C. - An early goal from Debola Ogunseye is all that Newberry would need as the Indians defeated Mars Hill, 1-0, in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon. The win gives Newberry three points against SAC opponents and evens the team's league record at 1-1-0.

The Indians entered the match against Mars Hill looking for their first conference win of the season. The offense struck early when Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) hit scored on a breakaway in the 26th minute. The goal was his eighth of the season and gave the Indians a 1-0 lead.

The one goal would be the difference as Mars Hill was never able to score an equalizer. The Lions took 11 shots in the game but only managed to put one on goal.

Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) claimed the top spot in the Newberry goalkeeping records with the clean sheet. His five career shutouts and three shutouts this season are both the best-ever by an Indian goalkeeper.

Ogunseye's goal was his fourth game winner of the season and his second in the past two games. The junior already has eight career game winning goals in just his second season at Newberry.

The win improves the Indians to 6-3-0 on the year. The team is tied for second in the SAC with three points and a record of 1-1-0.

Newberry next return home on Wednesday, September 26, when the Indians will try to build on their undefeated home record against the Patriots of Francis Marion University. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
