Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - Heather Sexton scored the first goal of her career as Newberry College defeated Wingate University, 1-0, in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday night. The win moves the Lady Indians into first place in the SAC with seven points and a 2-0-1 record.
Newberry entered the match Saturday night coming off a 10-goal performance against Brevard College, but it was the Lady Indians' defense that was again on show against the Bulldogs.
The game was scoreless through the first 71 minutes until Sexton (Florissant, Mo.) scored from close range off a rebound from a Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) shot off the post to make it 1-0.
One goal was all the Lady Indians would need as they shut out their opponent for the third time this season. The Newberry defense has held its opponents to one goal or fewer in six of their nine matches this year. The team's .707 goals against average is 25th in the country.
Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) had one save as she recorded her second shutout of the year. The senior's .517 goals against average heading into the game is 21st best in the country. Beckerle is second all-time in the Newberry record books with 11 career shutouts, just two behind the leader Bobby Gainey.
Newberry remains undefeated against Division II opponents with a 4-0-4 record in Division II play. The team's only loss this season was against Division I Charleston Southern.
The Lady Indians will try to extend their undefeated streak in SAC play on Tuesday, September 25, when they travel to Mars Hill, N.C., to play the Lions of Mars Hill College.
