Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Lady Indians went to double overtime again as they tied Catawba College, 1-1, in Division II women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Lady Indians are now 2-1-4 on the year and have compiled four points in South Atlantic Conference play with a record of 1-0-1.
Both Newberry and Catawba played very strong right from the beginning of the game. While both teams had solid looks on the offensive end, neither was able to convert them to shots on goal.
The game remained scoreless until the 54th minute when Newberry's Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was able to connect on a header off a throw in by senior Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.). Catawba's goalie Kathleen Blake came out to play the throw in but was unable to clear it giving Farfan an open look at the goal. The goal was Farfan's second in two games and gave Newberry a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 67th minute when Newberry committed an unfortunate foul in the penalty area on Catawba's Andrea Dunshie. Dunshie earned a penalty kick and beat Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) in the top right corner.
The Lady Indians continued to put pressure on Catawba's back line and had a chance to win the game in the 72nd minute. Junior Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) took a shot from the left side of the goal which just hit the right post. The rebound went out to Farfan who hit the crossbar on her shot. Catawba corralled the rebound and cleared the ball out to the midfield.
In the overtime periods both sides played strong but neither offense could get themselves into a position to get the winning goal. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The game was a midfield battle for most of the afternoon with neither offense able to put together a sustained attack.
The Lady Indians continue to be undefeated in Division II play. The team's lone loss this season came to Division I Charleston Southern University.
This is the sixth overtime game that the Lady Indians have played this year. The team has yet to finish a game against a DII opponent in regulation. Newberry is just four overtime games shy of breaking the NCAA single season record for overtime games in a season.
The Lady Indians next game is Wednesday, September 19 when they host the Tornados of Brevard College.
