Box Score DUE WEST - Adriana Farfan scored her first goal of the year 82 seconds into overtime as Newberry College defeated Erskine College, 1-0, in Division II women's soccer action Wednesday night. The win was the second in a row for the Lady Indians, who improve to 2-1-3 this year.
It only took one extra period this time for Newberry to record its second straight 1-0 victory. Heading into the game, four of the Lady Indians' five games this season had gone into double overtime.
The Newberry offense put together a relentless attack as they outshot the Flying Fleet, 18-3, and had 13 corner kicks in the game, but a strong performance by the Erskine defense kept the game scoreless through the first 90 minutes. Erskine's freshman goalie Si'Ara Washington played very well stopping all five shots on goal in regulation.
In the overtime period, Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) connected on a header to give the Lady Indians the golden goal and the win. Both Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) and Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) assisted on the goal.
Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) was rarely challenged on the way to her first shutout of the season. Though Beckerle played the majority of the previous game against Lincoln Memorial, she was forced to leave the 1-0 victory in the second overtime when she took a cleat to the face.
This is Beckerle's 10th career shutout which gives the senior sole possession of second on the Newberry career records list. Bobby Gainey is first with 13 career shutouts. Gainey played for the Lady Indians from 1996-99.
Newberry's next game is Saturday, September 15, when they return home to face Catawba College in the team's second South Atlantic Conference match. The Lady Indians have compiled three points and a record of 1-0-0 in conference play.
