Newberry shuts out USC Aiken, 2-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Danielle Beckerle tied the record for most career shutouts as Newberry College defeated USC Aiken, 2-0, in NCAA Division II women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Beckerle and the 13th in her career.

From the beginning of the match the Newberry offense dominated play. The Lady Indians' offense controlled the ball in the Pacers' zone for much of the contest, racking up 14 shots including seven on goal.

Newberry took the lead in the 38th minute when Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) found Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) for her third goal of the season. Jones dribbled the ball up the left side before feeding Butler who was running up the middle. Butler shot the ball on one touch, sending it past USC Aiken goalie Nicole Westphal, and into the back of the net.

The Lady Indians would add an insurance goal early in the second half when Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) beat Westphal in a one-on-one and scored her sixth goal of the season. Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) sent the ball forward to Tumblin who received it behind the Pacers' backline.

Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) did not have to work hard for her record tying shutout. The senior goalie faced no shots on goal as the Lady Indians' backline continually shut down the USC Aiken offense. The Pacers managed just one shot in the contest which came in the 86th minute.

Westphal played solid in goal for USC Aiken recording four saves in the contest.

The Lady Indians return to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday, October 12, at 4:30 p.m., when they host the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne. Newberry is currently third in the SAC with 7 points in conference play and a 2-2-1 record.
