Wingate defeats Newberry, 1-0, in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament

WINGATE, N.C. - Third-seeded Wingate University defeated sixth-seeded Newberry College, 1-0, in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. The loss drops the Indians to 9-10 to end the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs managed to get a ball across in the 57th minute when Kerrin Sheldon chipped in a shot off a rebound from a shot by Luke Mulholland. Mulholland's right-to-left shot was saved by Newberry goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.). The ball squirted to the left-hand side of the goal and Sheldon capitalized by punching in his eighth goal of the season.

The goal would prove to be the game winner as the Wingate defense shutdown the normally potent Newberry offense. The Indians were outshot 27-6 in the game including 12-2 in shots on goal.

Dieterich helped the keep the game within reach, compiling nine saves in the loss.

Wingate advances to the semifinals of the Food Lion SAC Tournament, where they will play second-seeded Tusculum College at 3 p.m. Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.
