Box Score NEWBERRY - Two first half goals were all that Newberry College would need as the Lady Indians shutout Lander University, 2-0, in NCAA Division II women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon. Danielle Beckerle recorded her third shutout of the season in the victory.
From the opening whistle Newberry pressured the Bearcats in the offensive zone. That pressure paid off in the 26th minute when the Lady Indians were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead on a Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C) header. Jenn Richards (Gainesville, Fla.) took a free kick and sent it into the box where it was kicked around before Tumblin connected on the header. Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) and Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) assisted on Tumblin's fifth goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, in the 28th minute, Newberry extended its lead on a goal by Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.). Carbonell took a pass from Woiwode on the left side of the goal and shot the ball low past Lander goalie Rachael Hines.
The two goal lead would prove to be enough as Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) and the Lady Indians back line allowed the Bearcats few good looks.
Beckerle recorded five saves on the way to her third shutout this season. The senior now has 12 career shutouts and is just one behind Newberry's all-time career leader, Bobby Gainey.
Newberry remained undefeated at home, improving its record to 2-0-2 in the Newberry Soccer Complex. The Lady Indians last loss came on October 7 of last year, when they lost to Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Newberry will try and return the favor on Saturday, October 6, when the Lady Indians travel to Savannah, Ga., to play Armstrong Atlantic, which is currently ranked eighth in the country and first in the Southeast region. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
