Goalie Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) recorded seven saves for Newberry in the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne struck first when Nate Whitehurst scored off his own rebound in the 18th minute. Whitehurst took a shot from point blank range which Dieterich saved but the shot ricocheted off the Indians goalie and back to Whitehurst who managed to just get the ball over the line before Dieterich could swipe it away.
In the 29th minute, Newberry had numerous chances to tie the game but could not get the ball into the net as Lenoir-Rhyne goalie Bobby Bolender made three outstanding saves.
Bernard Gilbert (Columbia, S.C.) lofted a shot from 20 yards out that looked like it was going in, but Bolender managed to just deflect it off the cross bar.
Off the subsequent corner kick the Indians had two scoring chances, both from inside the 6 yard box. Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) connected on a header that Bolender just managed to get his hands on, the rebound went out to Gilbert who tried to follow only to have his shot saved as well.
Despite the scoring opportunities the Indians headed into halftime still trailing 1-0.
Newberry appeared to tie the game in the 62nd minute when Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) put a free kick into the lower right corner off the goal. But the score was waived off as the official had not restarted play. The subsequent shot by Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) went high.
The Bears would add to their lead in the 68th minute when Amar Bkric connected on a header off a cross from Szymon Hryszczyk.
Ogunseye appeared to get Newberry on the board in the 88th minute but the goal was again waived off as the linesman had called Ogunseye offsides.
