Box Score

NEWBERRY - No. 20 Lander University defeated Newberry College, 2-1, in NCAA Division II men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Indians to 9-7 on the season.

Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) scored his twelfth goal of the season for Newberry in the defeat.

The Indians came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Bearcats 15-7, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Newberry was unable to break through though, as Lander goalie Garrett Daum kept the Indians off the board, saving all six shots on goal.

Gyamfi broke the 0-0 tie in the 52nd minute when he and Shane Abbott (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) had a two-on-one against the Bearcat defender. Gyamfi beat a diving Daum with the shot to make the score 1-0. Abbott earned his team-leading seventh assist of the year on the play.

Lander struck back in the 59th minute when Bearcats midfielder Martyn Bell lofted a shot from 40 yards out. The ball fell just below the crossbar and just above the outstretched hand of Newberry goalie Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) to tie the score at 1 a piece.

The Bearcats took the lead in the 66th minute when Adam Arthur connected with Ivan Stoykov. Stoykov beat his defender on a run up the right side and Arthur led the streaking forward with a pass in the box. Stoykov beat Dieterich with a point blank shot to give the Bearcats the lead and the win.

Newberry's next game is Wednesday, October 24, at 4 p.m. when the Indians host conference rival, No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne.
