Late goal lifts Newberry to 3-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Inga Woiwode scored in the 85th minute to lift Newberry College to a 3-2 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon. With the win the Lady Indians move into a tie for first place in the SAC with 10 points in conference play and a 3-2-1 conference record.

Newberry struck first when Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) gave the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with her second goal of the year. Jenn Richards (Gainesville, Fla.) delivered a free kick into the box which Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) forwarded on to Landgrebe who knocked it past Bears' goalie Nicole Ray.

In the 55th minute the Lady Indians extended their lead when Tumblin got the ball in front of the Lenoir-Rhyne goal and put it in the back of the net. Landgrebe and Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) assisted on the goal which was Tumblin's seventh of the season.

Lenoir-Rhyne got one back in the 59th minute when Madison Shope lifted a ball over the Newberry backline to Whitney Cline who beat Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) on a one on one.

In the 82nd minute, the Lenoir-Rhyne offense again found the back of the net. Michelle Garcia corralled a ball that was cleared out of the box and fired a shot from 30 yards out. The shot sailed over Beckerle's outstretched hands and into the goal.

With the score tied 2-2, it seemed that Newberry was headed to its eighth overtime game of the year until Woiwode received the ball behind the Bears' defense and beat Ray in a one-on-one. Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) found Woiwode on the run up the middle to earn the assist.

The Lady Indians improve their record to 7-4-4 on the year, including a 4-0-2 mark at home. Newberry has not lost in the Newberry Soccer Complex since October 7 of last year.

Newberry's next game is Tuesday, October 16, at 4 p.m. when the Lady Indians travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to battle the Falcons of Pfeiffer University.
