Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College Indians fell, 2-1, to Wingate University on Wednesday night, as an 84th minute header by A.J. Wullschleger sent the Indians to their second consecutive loss.
Newberry falls to 2-2-0 on the season, and is now 0-1-0 in conference play. The match was the 2006 South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.
Wullschleger converted a header after Nolan Sheldon sent in a driven cross from the left side to give Wingate (3-2-0, 1-0-0 SAC) the victory. The late match-winner immediately followed a clearance from a Wingate corner kick.
The match was tied 1-1 at halftime. Wingate freshman forward Junior Nyemb tallied an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to put the hosts on the board first.
Newberry answered just before the half, as sophomore forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) was fouled inside the penalty area to draw the Indians' first spot kick of the season in the 44th minute. Ogunseye took advantage of the opportunity and converted on the penalty kick to tie the match.
The Indians would have their chances in the second half, but several forward pushes resulted in Bulldog defensive clearances or shots that were unable to find the target.
Wingate outshot Newberry 17-12 for the match. Indian senior goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) allowed two goals and notched six saves in his first action of the season. Bulldog freshman Evan Rouse surrendered one goal and recorded five saves.
Newberry returns home for a weekend stretch with games on Saturday and Sunday. The Indians host Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday, as part of a double bill. Kickoff of the men's match is scheduled for 5 p.m., after the completion of the women's match. A quick turnaround sees Newberry host Coker College on Sunday, with a 3 p.m. start time.
