Men's Soccer earns first SAC win of season over Mars Hill, 2-1 in overtime

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Indians overcame a late surge by the Mars Hill College Lions to win, 2-1, in the first overtime, in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action here Saturday.

Newberry (4-3-0, 1-1-0 SAC) opened the scoring in the 13th minute on the second goal of the season by freshman Philip Tanner (New Hope, S.C.). Tanner followed up a shot off the right post by Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) to give Newberry the 1-0 lead.

The Indians were only seven seconds from clinching their first conference victory of the season in regulation, were it not for the actions of Mars Hill's spectacular substitute, Jonathan Adams. Adams, normally a field player, entered the game at goalkeeper in the 21st minute when starter Patrick Browne was injured from a fall making a diving save. Adams proceeded to make ten saves, and scored the equalizer in the 90th minute when he came forward to head in a corner kick taken by Alex Lord.

In the overtime period, brothers Kyle Rudder and Edsel Rudder (Arima, Trinidad) worked together to set up Ogunseye for the game-winner. In the 97th minute, Kyle Rudder received a pass on the right side and passed along to Edsel Rudder. Edsel found Ogunseye unmarked at the back post, and Ogunseye blasted the shot home to seal the win.

Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) and Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) split time in net for Newberry to pick up the win. The Indians outshot the Lions, 29-15.

Newberry's next game comes on Tuesday, when they take the short trip to Clinton to face off against archrival Presbyterian College for a 7 p.m. start. Mars Hill hosts Salem International University on Friday for a 7 p.m. start.
