Box Score NEWBERRY - Newberry College scored early and often in a landslide 11-0 win over visiting Converse College in non-conference women's soccer action Thursday.
Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) led the Lady Indians with three goals and two assists in the match. The performances boosts her season totals to 15 points on five goals and five assists, tying her for the team lead with Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas).
Newberry (6-5-2 overall) earned its first goal in the third minute of play on a drive from freshman Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) off a double assist from Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.) and Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.). The goal was the first of Griffith's collegiate career.
Newberry junior defender Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.) followed up just four minutes later with a long blast to the lower left corner from a Butler assist. The goal was the first in Barnes' three years at Newberry.
Butler notched her first goal in the ninth minute on a low cross from Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) and got her second on a double assist from defender Greta Hewett (Charleston, S.C.) and Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) in the 25th minute.
In the 37th minute, Butler fed Griffith for the game's fifth goal, and Griffith's second of the game.
The first half was closed with Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) marking her return to the lineup with her first goal since early in the 2005 season, giving Newberry a 6-0 halftime lead.
Just two minutes into the second half Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) opened her scoring account for the season on a double assist from Hewett and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England).
In the 60th minute a corner kick from Katherine Prete (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was headed in by Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) for the eighth goal of the game and the first of Geisman's career.
Butler put her name on the scoresheet again in the 79th minute, as she earned the hat trick off an assist from Geisman.
The series of career firsts continued in the 84th minute when Katelyn Luby (Charleston, S.C.) found the back of the net on assists from Prete and Farfan.
The final goal was an unassisted effort from the edge of the penalty area by Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C.), putting 11 on the board for the Lady Indians, and giving Brady her first tally of the season.
The result marks the fourth time in program history that the Lady Indians have scored in double-digits in a game, and ties for second for largest margin of victory in Newberry history.
Not only did the offense explode, but the defense shut down Converse (2-11-0 overall) as well, allowing the All-Stars no shots during the game. Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) and Johanna Rathbun (Bedford, Texas) combined for the shutout.
Newberry continues its non-conference efforts on Saturday, when the Lady Indians host Armstrong Atlantic State University at 2 p.m.
