Box Score NEWBERRY - An early goal by Debola Ogunseye proved to be all that Newberry would need on Wednesday, but the Indians put four more goals in the back of the net to secure the result, as they defeated Catawba College, 5-0, in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday.
The marks the first time Newberry (7-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 SAC) has prevailed over Catawba in program history. The teams have now played 16 times, dating back to the first time the teams met in 1995. Catawba falls to 8-5-0 overall, and 2-3-0 in the SAC.
Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) had a hand in all but one of the Newberry goals, scoring three and assisting on another, for a seven-point performance. Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) combined for the shutout at goalkeeper.
Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) fed Ogunseye on a pass to the left channel in the eighth minute to open the scoring. Ogunseye beat Catawba goalkeeper Tyler Held low and to the left, giving him his ninth goal of the season. The assist was the first point of Busbee's collegiate career.
Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C.) scored the second goal of the game on a volley near the back post on a free kick from Jeff Bell (North Augusta, S.C.) in the 50th minute. The goal was Baker's second of the season.
Ogunseye tacked on two more goals in the 59th and 63rd minutes, for his tenth and eleventh of the season, with Jeff Hinshaw (Athens, Tenn.) assisting in the 63rd.
Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) closed out the scoring in the 88th minute, heading in a corner kick by Ogunseye that was flicked on by Philip Tanner (New Hope, S.C.). The goal was the first score of Mottel's collegiate career.
Catawba had multiple scoring chances turned away on diving saves from Linn and Dieterich. The Catawba Indians were unable to produce much offensively despite outshooting Newberry 17-16. Catawba was also caught offsides 11 times.
Acting in the role of honorary coach was Newberry College history professor Jesse Scott, alongside head coach Sam Okpodu and assistant coach Matt Lucas.
"It was a great win for us today," Okpodu said. "We played very well, and we were honored by professor Scott joining us."
Newberry takes a break from conference play, as the Indians host Pfeiffer University on Friday with a 4 p.m. start. Catawba visits Presbyterian on Saturday at 7 p.m.
