Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Newberry College seemed destined for an upset, but No. 17 Carson-Newman College pulled back two goals in the second half to win, 3-2, in women's soccer action Saturday. The game was the regular season finale for both sides.
Carson-Newman (14-1-0, 6-1-0 SAC) clinched the regular season conference title with the win.
Newberry (9-6-2, 2-3-2 SAC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an own goal off of a throw-in by Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.).
The Lady Indians took the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute on a goal from Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas). Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, N. Yorkshire, England) picked up assists on the goal.
The Lady Eagles brought the score to 2-1 at the half on a 37th minute goal by Christie Murray.
C-N tied the game in the 72nd minute when Julie Nelson blasted a shot in to the top shelf from 20 yards out. The game winner came from the foot of Katie Perea in the 74th minute.
Newberry was outshot 25-10 by C-N. Newberry's Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) went the distance between the pipes, making nine saves. Carson-Newman's Nyssa Griffin made four saves.
Newberry's first round matchup in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament will be announced Sunday.
