Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne College (13-1-0, 3-1-0) shut out Newberry College (8-6-0, 3-2-0), 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match.
Freshman forward David Blackshear came off the bench to tally a goal and an assist while freshman goalkeeper Mark Jorgensen stopped two Newberry penalty kicks to lead Lenoir-Rhyne, who won its fifth straight match and shut out its fourth consecutive opponent.
L-R freshman midfielder Matthew Lee opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when he scored off a deflection.
Blackshear registered the Bears' second score in the 70th minute on a long breakaway and assisted on Lenoir-Rhyne's third and final goal with a pass over the Indian goalkeeper to freshman forward Amar Brkic for the score.
Jorgensen picked up the win in goal while Newberry's Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) suffered the loss despite saving seven shots.
The Indians' Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) saw both his penalty kicks stopped by Jorgensen.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which tied last year's school record for wins in a single season, travels to Wingate, N.C., to take on Wingate University next Wednesday at 7 p.m., while Newberry plays at Lander in Due West, S.C., Wednesday at 7 p.m., as well.
