Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Newberry men's soccer team was handed a 3-0 loss by Mount Olive College in tonight's season opener. An early goal, scored by Trojan Bradley Carroll in the ninth minute (Swansboro, N.C.), proved to be enough to defeat the Indians.
Newberry made several scoring attacks early, but couldn't produce. The Indians' first chance at a goal came off the foot of freshman Jeff Bell (Johnston, S.C.), only to be saved by Mount Olive keeper Chris Roush (Hubert, N.C.). After being down 1-0 at the half, Newberry fell into an even bigger hole when Reid Clewis (Wilmington, N.C.) punched through a Trojan goal nine minutes into the second half. The Indians had another scoring opportunity in the 58th minute when senior defender Miles Childers (Casper, Wyo.) sent a shot sailing over the crossbar.
Shortly after the Newberry threat, the Trojans topped off the game with an Erik Small (Jacksonville, N.C.) penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
The Indians, who fall to 0-1-0 on the season, were outshot 17-6 for the match. Indian keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) notched five saves for the game, while Mount Olive's Roush recorded one. The Trojans improved to 3-0-0 on the year.
Next up for the Indians is the home opener against Wingate University on September 7 at 4 p.m. The Trojans are set to face USC Aiken on September 8 at 7 p.m.
