Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest to conference opponent Catawba College tonight on the road at Frock Field. The Indians of Catawba, who are the NSCAA/adidas No. 18 team in the nation, were led by senior Gareth Turnbull (Christchurch, New Zealand) who scored two second-half goals in the win. With the loss, Newberry falls to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. Catawba improves to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC.
The Indians of Newberry got off to an energetic start as they were rewarded two early corner kicks. However, the men were also penalized with several offsides calls. After a half-hour of scoreless play, Catawba's Nathan Zuzga (Troy, Mich.) opened up the scoring as he blasted in a shot at the 30:11 mark, just inside the 18 yard box. Turnbull put in Catawba's second goal in the 68th minute as he took his own rebound off the post and put it in the lower right corner of the net, just past Newberry keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.). Zuzga found Turnbull streaking down the left wing in the 83rd minute who found the back of the net for the second time, making the score 3-0. Throughout the game, Newberry had a couple of opportunities to pressure the Catawba goal, but the Indians were unable to get anything to materialize.
In the match, the Indians of Newberry were out-shot 24-5. Newberry's lone shot on goal came from senior forward Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.). Dan Fitzgerald (Seaford, Del.) stopped Pinckney's shot for his only save of the night, picking up the shutout. Newberry's Linn made seven saves as he played all 90 minutes.
The Indians of Newberry stay on the road as they travel to Alderson-Broaddus College on September 23rd. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. Catawba prepares for a September 28th home match against Wingate University. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
