Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. - Daniel Waymont (Weaverville, N.C.) connected on a cross sent in by David Oesch (Jackson, Tenn.) with just 4:51 left in regulation to lift the Lions over Newberry College, 2-1, in men's South Atlantic Conference soccer action at Meares Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Lions improved to 1-1 in the SAC and 4-5 overall. The Indians fell to 1-2 in league play and 1-3-1 overall with the loss.
Newberry scored the first goal of the match at the 17:29 mark after Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) hit the back of the net on a direct kick. The teams carried that score into the locker room at the intermission. Matt Humphrey (Maryville, Tenn.) tied the mach on a header at the 69:57 mark off a corner kick from Scott Nichols (Salt Lake City, Utah).
Total shots were close with Newberry holding a 12-11 advantage. However, the Lions out shot the Indians 8-5 in the second frame. Josiah Larson (Falls Church, Va.) played all 90 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made three saves in the win. Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) played the first 75 minutes in goal for Newberry and Terrance Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) played the last 15. Linn made four saves while Dieterich recorded one.
Newberry returns to action on September 21st when they travel to Catawba College for a 7 p.m. game. Mars Hill is set to host West Virginia Wesleyan on September 24th at 6 p.m.
