Box Score NEWBERRY - Newberry College sprinted to a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes of Friday afternoon's match with Davis & Elkins College, but a 78th-minute goal from the Senators' Michael Knox (Toronto, Ont.) evened the score as the game ended in a two-all tie.
Newberry (5-5-2, 1-3 South Atlantic Conference) has lost only one of its last six matches. Davis & Elkins' record improves to 3-5-3 (1-2-1 WVIAC).
While a drizzle fell during most of the day, a steady rain began to fall around the 50th minute. Play slowed and it appeared that Newberry would take the 2-1 intermission lead all the way to the end, but Knox used an incredible series of moves, shaking two Newberry defenders on the left side of the goal, to fire a high ball into the opposite corner.
Players had barely broken a sweat before Newberry's Zachary Gilliland (Slippery Rock, Pa.) headed in his first career goal off a high cross from Ricardo Silveira (Sao Paolo, Brazil). Silveira found Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) in front of the box in the 25th minute, and Taylor delivered a hard shot for a two-nil Indian lead.
Davis & Elkins put a goal on the board just four minutes later. Stephen Pirrera (Perry Hall, Md.) placed a corner kick perfectly for Josemaria Cantillo (Costa Rica), who headed a shot off crossbar into the net.
Both teams were very aggressive throughout the contest, as was evidenced by 48 combined fouls and seven cards. The Senators played a man down for the final 25 minutes as Makesi Bostic (San Fernando, Trinidad) was red-carded for a blatant foul on a Newberry breakaway.
Newberry outshot Davis & Elkins 17-12. Newberry keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) stopped three shots, and his counterpart Ben Royce (Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.) saved two.
Newberry hosts West Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., and Davis & Elkins travels to Clinton for a matchup with Presbyterian at the same time.
