Newberry loses heartbreaker to No. 7 Carson-Newman

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's soccer team lost an overtime heartbreaker to nationally ranked No. 7 and South Atlantic Conference leader Carson-Newman College today, 1-0, at the Newberry Soccer Complex.  Carlos Maqueda (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored the game-winner in the 92nd minute, spoiling the Indians' upset bid on senior day.  Newberry is now 7-8-2 overall and 1-6 in the conference, while Carson-Newman improves to 16-1-0 overall and 7-0 in the SAC.

The Indians kept the Eagles scoreless in the first half, despite getting out shot 11-4.  Keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) came up with some big stops to keep Newberry in it.  Linn recorded seven saves on the game, all of which came in the first half.  Carson-Newman goalie Tyler Baldock (Surrey, British Columbia) ended the game with four stops.

Carson-Newman dictated play early in the second half, but the Indians were able to put more pressure in the Eagle box later in the half.  Newberry put together a couple of close calls late in the game, including near misses by Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) and Akil Burgen (Trincity, Trinidad), but were unable to net the go-ahead goal.  Carson-Newman made a late threat of their own, but Maqueda's header sailed wide.

Maqueda wasted little time in redeeming himself, as he netted the game's only goal just under two minutes into the first overtime.  Forward Dario Carrasco (Andalucia Malaga, Spain) made a run down the center after a scramble for a loose ball, finding an open Maqueda to his left for the score.

The Indians were out shot 18-13 for the game, but earned five corner kicks to Carson-Newman's four.

Next up for both teams is the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, November 1st.  As the top team in the conference, Carson-Newman will host Newberry at a time to be determined.
