Newberry dominated the game early, but let the Cobras back into the game late in the first half. The Indian offense had several good scoring opportunities, but couldn't score. Coker opened up the scoring in the 40th minute after a mishandled ball in the Newberry box. Freshman Chris Freeman (Clemmons, N.C.) lofted a cross toward the back post that Nick Shaver (Irmo, S.C.) headed past Newberry keeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.). Coker held the lead for the rest of the half.
The Indians came out firing in the second half as they controlled the ball early. Forwards Edsel Rudder (Arima, Trinidad) and Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) kept the Newberry offense clicking until Rudder was able to assist on the Indians' first goal. Newberry evened the score in the 65th minute after sophomore William Koch (Greenville, S.C.) headed a pass into Rudder who fired a shot off the post. Freshman Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C.) was there to clean up the rebound into the back of the net, recording his first collegiate goal. Rudder was credited with the assist.
Seven minutes later, Newberry struck again to notch the go-ahead goal. Koch was once again vital, as he set up the eventual game-winner in the 72nd minute. After making a long run, Koch sent the ball in to Taylor, who served the ball from left to right to an awaiting Chad Domis (Columbia, S.C.). With the goal, Domis netted his second game winning goal of the season. Coker rallied late in the game, but missed their one or two chances to extend the game.
In the goal, Coker keeper Brent Washburn (Barnwell, S.C.) recorded two saves, while Dieterich compiled six. After getting off just two shots in the first half, the Indians ended up topping Coker in total shots, 12-9.
Up next for the Indians is a much-awaited match-up against Presbyterian College. The action begins at 4 p.m. on October 26th at the Newberry Soccer Complex. The next game for the Cobras will be on October 22nd as they travel to play conference opponent Erskine College at 7 p.m.
