Lenoir-Rhyne men's soccer upends Newberry in a physical 1-0 match

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Sean Brunk scored off Rocky Gifford's corner kick in the 78th minute to give Lenoir-Rhyne the only goal of the match as the Bears squeaked by Newberry 1-0 Saturday afternoon.

Newberry (6-6-2, 1-4-0 South Atlantic) had a goal late in the first half, but the referee called it back due to an offside violation on the Indians. The two teams continued to battle in the scoreless tie until the Merritt Island, Fla.-native Brunk put the ball in the back of the net for Lenoir-Rhyne (11-4-2, 1-3-0 SAC) after Gifford's corner kick and Robert Hajnal's pass.

Newberry's Bryan Linn, a native of Safety Harbor, Fla., recorded four saves in the match while Lenoir-Rhyne's Tom Gott also recorded four saves. The match, marred by physical play, witnessed six yellow cards and one red card issued.

The Indians had 20 fouls to Lenoir-Rhyne's 25 and had seven corner kicks to the Bears' five. Newberry took 10 shots to Lenoir-Rhyne's nine.

Newberry next travels to Hartsville, S.C., to face Coker College on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The match against Coker is the Indians' final regular season non-conference match. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Mars Hill in Hickory on the same day at 4 p.m.
