Newberry falls to No. 23 Tusculum, 2-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – NSCAA/adidas No. 23 Tusculum College scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 South Atlantic Conference win over Newberry College on Saturday at the TC Upper Field. With the loss, Newberry moves to 6-4-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference, while Tusculum improves to 6-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.

The Lady Indians were held to just four shots, while the Pioneers took 15 shots of their own.

With a slew of players crowded around the net, Tusculum tallied its first goal in the 39th minute when Patricia Awosiyan (Titusville, Fla.) took a shot that ricocheted off a defender and into the path of Courtney Hambel (Melbourne, Fla.), who drove in the goal from about five yards out.

Ashley Moreira (London, Ontario, Canada) netted the second goal in the 78th minute off a corner kick.

Lady Indian goalkeeper Joanna Rathbun (Bedford, Texas) recorded five saves, while TC keeper Whitney Wardrop (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) made two stops.

Next on the schedule for Newberry is a visit to Queens (N.C) on Thursday, Oct. 6. The action will begin at 4:30 p.m. Tusculum will next embark on a four-match road stretch, beginning with a contest at USC Upstate on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
