Lady Indians shut-out Anderson College 2-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lady Indians dominated Anderson College wire to wire Wednesday afternoon at the Newberry Soccer Complex, collecting a 2-0 win in the conclusion of the home portion of the women’s 2004 soccer schedule.  The Lady Indians improved to 13-4 on the season.

Newberry out-shot their opponent 23 to three in the match.  The Lady Indians also monopolized possession throughout the game, not allowing the Trojans a single corner kick.

The Lady Indians came out in an offensive mood as they established an upbeat, pressuring tempo early and rarely let up.  Unfortunately, they could not translate the pressure into a first half goal, as numerous attempts were either snuffed out by the Anderson defense, or just plain botched by Newberry.

Finally, in the 52nd minute, Newberry’s leading scorer Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Tex.) found a terrific through-ball courtesy of Greta Hewett (Charleston, S.C.).  Woiwode in turn sent a shot to the far post for the opening goal and game-winner.  The goal was Woiwode’s 12th of the season, including her third game-winner.

The Lady Indians put the match to bed in the 57th minute, when Woiwode once again found herself with the ball on a long run.  Woiwode’s shot was saved by Trojan keeper Meghan Woodall (Angier, N.C.), but she could not control the ball as it dribbled away from her in the box.  Newberry midfielder Kristin Parker (LaPorte, Tex.) one touched the rebound into the back of the net, sending the Lady Indians up 2-0.  That would be all the scoring Newberry would need to seal their school record 13th victory.

The Lady Indians can add to their win total this weekend as they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to do battle with South Atlantic Conference foe Carson-Newman at 2 p.m.  Carson-Newman enters the match tied for first in the SAC, and are ranked eighth nationally.  Regardless of that outcome, the Lady Indians will host their first-ever SAC first round tournament game at Newberry on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd.  The time has not been confirmed at press time, but continue to check www.newberryindians.com for the latest news.
