Indians battle hard, fall short on senior day 2-0 against Mt. Olive

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Indians honored their three seniors on the last home match of the 2004 season Wednesday afternoon, but couldn't send them off as winners as Mt. Olive blanked the Indians 2-0 at the Newberry Soccer Complex.  Newberry falls to 8-5-2 on the season.

The scoring started for the Trojans in the 12th minute, as Adam Caston (Jacksonville, N.C.) collected an errant ball in the box, firing a shot to the far post.  Indian keeper and reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had no real chance at denying the shot as Newberry fell behind 1-0.

The Indians were put back on their heels a bit for most of the rest of the half, perhaps not anticipating the blazing speed of the Trojans.  However, the Indians staved off some fine Mt. Olive offensive chances, entering the intermission down 1-0.

The Indians regrouped in the second half to play a brand of soccer more accustomed to their strengths, speed and creativity.  Both Jason Wiggins (Charleston, S.C.) and Ricardo Silveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) harassed the Trojans defense after the break, forcing keeper Chris Roush (Hubert, N.C.) to make difficult saves.  However Roush bested the Indians at every turn, collecting eight saves on the afternoon.

The game was put out of reach in the 86th minute, when Matt Hobbs (Swansboro, N.C.) cleaned up a ball after a Trojan corner kick, sending a shot to Linn's left.  The ball sailed past Linn, giving Mt. Olive an insurmountable 2-0 lead.

The Indian men do battle next Tuesday with archrival Presbyterian College at Clinton, S.C.
