Lady Indians Bear-ly escape on the road vs. Lenoir-Rhyne, escape with 2-1 decision

Hickory, N.C. – For the seemingly umpteenth time this season, the Newberry College women's soccer team made a little more history Saturday after their 2-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne.  Not only did the Lady Indians tie the school record for South Atlantic Conference wins in a season with four; the win also guaranteed Newberry will be hosting a first round SAC playoff game, a feat never before accomplished in the programs ten-year history.  Overall Newberry is 11-4 on the season, and 4-2 in conference play.

The Indians opened the scoring at the 21:20 mark when Katherine Prete (Colorado Springs, Colo.) received a cross from Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and scored right in the front of net.  It was Prete’s first goal of her Indian career.  Newberry made it 2-0 in the 56th minute after Farfan scored, unassisted, in the box.   It was Farfan’s first game-winner of the season.  With Farfan’s three points in the match, she moved in a tie for second on the team in total points.

L-R rallied to cut the deficit to 2-1 thanks to junior forward Cory Livesay's (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley HS) goal off a deflection in the box.  The goal was Livesay's first of the year.

Newberry, behind goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.), was able to hold on from there.  Beckerle notched three saves in the match, as the Lady Indian defense did quite a number on the Lady Bears front line.

The Lady Indians beat L-R for just the second time in ten tries all time.

Newberry is back in action Wednesday at 2 p.m., when the Lady Indians will take on USC Aiken at the Newberry Soccer Complex.
