Newberry men's soccer beats Davis & Elkins, 3-2

Box Score

ELKINS, W.Va. - The Newberry men's soccer team continued its winning ways Friday, defeating Davis & Elkins 3-2 during the first game of the Indians' West Virginia college road swing.  Newberry moves back to .500 on the year with the victory, improving their overall record to 4-4.

Edsel Rudder (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) notched the opening goal in the 11th minute, finding some space after a beautiful ball from James Hammerl (Emporia, Kan.).  Davis & Elkins were able to level the match at one, as Makesi Bostic found the net.  Both teams entered the intermission tied at one.

Just 1:35 elapsed in play in the second half, when Indian forward Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) scored, displaying some fancy footwork of his own on the unassisted goal.  Juan Pablo Wunder (Santiago, Chile) notched his second-consecutive game winner in the 73rd minute.

Davis & Elkins scored in the 90th minute, after an ugly melee in which Taylor and midfielder Jeff Hinshaw (Athens, Tenn.) picked up the first Newberry red cards of the season.  Bostic received a red card for his participation in the extracurriculars.

The Indians are spending the night in the Mountain State tonight, resting before Sunday's battle with West Virginia Wesleyan.
