Indians run ends at home in SAC opener to Wingate

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Wingate freshman forward Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, N.Y) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on an insurance goal as Wingate University opened South Atlantic Conference play 2-0 at Newberry College on Saturday afternoon at the Newberry College Soccer Complex.

The Indians and Bulldogs (both 4-1) played tentatively for the first 15 minutes, trying to get a feel for the other squad's attack. In the 28th minutes, Elcock chased down a ball served by sophomore forward Steven Walsh (Cork, IRELAND) through the middle to beat Newberry freshman goalkeeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.). The goal was Elcock's third of the season.

The teams played to that 1-0 margin at the half. The Bulldogs (1-0 SAC) scored again in the 80th minute when Elcock got in the open with sophomore forward Robert Dawson (Manchester, ENGLAND) as the two put together an attack resulting in Dawson putting in the back of the net on Elcock's touch. For Dawson, it was season goal number six, which leads the team.

Newberry was held scoreless for the first time this season as Wingate keeper Philip Poole (Newcastle, ENGLAND) made a pair of saves. Seibert made four saves in his 90 minutes in goal for the Indians.

Wingate outshot Newberry 15-6 in the contest.

Wingate travels to Francis Marion University for a 4 p.m. game Wednesday afternoon while the Indians travel to Coker College Monday night in a 7 p.m. contest.
