Newberry wins 2003 season opener against Queens 1-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY -  Newberry College forward Jason Wiggins (Charleston, S.C.) put home an early goal off a rebound from a Shawn Liesch (Kissimmee, Fla.) miss to score the only goal in a 1-0 home win over Queens University to start the season. It was the first season-opening win for the Indians since the 2001 season, when they defeated Lincoln Memorial 3-1 in their first game of that year.

The Indians avenged a 6-0 shutout in Charlotte to begin last season against the Royals, a 2002 NCAA playoff team, and goalkeeping was big in the shutout of this season's result. Freshman keeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) had 11 saves in his first career collegiate game for the Indians, equaling the team's season shutout total for last year.

Newberry had just five shots on goal, but no keeper saves were recorded by Queens, which had four team saves on the day.

The Indians will try to win two in a row since the second and third games of last year when they take on Limestone College in Newberry on Wednesday afternoon. The game, which was scheduled to be played in Gaffney but moved to Newberry because of poor field conditions, will begin at 5 p.m., following the women's game.
