Box Score BELMONT, N.C. - 90 minutes of regulation time and two overtime periods were not enough to decide a winner Monday, as Belmont Abbey and Newberry played to a 1-1 draw in men's soccer action at Belmont.
The two teams played scoreless until midway through the second half, with the Crusaders drawing first blood. Jeff Strebler (Jacksonville, Fla.) took a pass from Allen Owensby (Asheville, N.C.) in the penalty area and beat Indians freshman goalie Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) in the 66th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Newberry tied the score just nine minutes later when, after a corner kick and scramble in front of goalie Sean O'Connor (LaCrescenta, Calif.), sophomore Miles Childers (Casper, Wyo.) was able to gain control and get a shot past the crowd in front and in the net. After that, neither team was able to get anything past either goalie. O'Connor made three saves for Belmont Abbey, who is now 7-6-2 on the season. Seibert made eight saves for Newberry, who is 7-6-3 after playing their second consecutive 1-1 draw.
Belmont Abbey will plunge back into CVAC play on Thursday, going on the road to face Pfeiffer at 4 p.m. The Indians host Carson-Newman College in South Atlantic Conference action for the home finale for Newberry Saturday at 1 p.m.
