Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne play to a 1-1 draw

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Newberry College scored a goal 11 minutes into the second half, and both Tom Skora (Boca Raton, Fla.) of Lenoir-Rhyne and Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) of Newberry held their opponent scoreless for the final 53 minutes as the teams played to as 1-1 tie in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. The result keeps the two teams tied in the conference standings at sixth place with each team playing just once more in league play.

The last time former Newberry head coach Bobby Ladimir, now the skipper at Lenoir-Rhyne, coached a match at Newberry, his then-Indians played to a 2-2 tie with Carson-Newman College, which was the last SAC stalemate for the Indians.

The Bears (5-8-3, 1-4-1) got on the board in the first four minutes on a free kick play by a pair of Bears seniors. Landon Pruitt (Seneca, S.C.) made the assist to teammate Eric Carpenter (Sylva, N.C.) for the goal at the 3:36 mark. L-R had the 1-0 lead at the half.

Newberry (7-6-2, 1-4-1) tied the match at the 56:23 mark by the efforts of a pair of freshmen. A crossing pass from Chad Domis (Irmo, S.C.) found a streaking Taylor Correll (Columbia, S.C.) for the half volley in the back of the net.

It was all defense from that point as L-R and Newberry combined for seven shots in the two overtimes, with neither team giving up a score.

Skora made eight saves to preserve the tie, including one in both of the overtime periods. Seibert made seven saves for the Indians, holding L-R scoreless for the final 106:24 of the match.

Lenoir-Rhyne finishes conference play Wednesday, when the Bears host Mars Hill College at 4 p.m. Newberry heads out of conference with a Monday afternoon match on the road at Belmont Abbey College at 3 p.m.
