CONOVER, N.C. – Newberry is in 19th position after the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional Tournament at the Rock Barn Spa and Golf Resort.
The Wolves saw a six-stroke improvement from yesterday's first round with a 12-over 296 on the day. Newberry is 14 strokes out of the all-important seventh position; the top seven teams, along with the top three individuals on a non-advancing team, will move on to compete in the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships.
Carlos Leandro led the charge for the Wolves on Tuesday, jumping 22 positions on the leaderboard into a tie for 29th with a one-under 70, his 16th round out of 28 this season finishing at or below par. He birdied four straight holes at one point during the day to help him to a five-stroke improvement over his first-round score. Leandro is currently four strokes out of position to advance as an individual.
Spencer Skiff was even on the day with a pair of birdies and 14 pars. He now leads the team with 17 rounds at or below par on the season. He improved by eight strokes over his Monday outing and is in a seven-way tie for 60th position.
Joining Skiff in that tie for 60th is
Jean van Niekerk who shot one off his career best with a three-over 74. Van Niekerk is eight over par overall with a 150 through the first 36 holes.
Ben Thompson sits at 13 over with an overall score of 155.
Harry Bolton finished Round Two with an 87, 16 over.
Top-ranked West Florida ended the day with a two-shot lead over Florida Southern. The Argonauts are one under for the tournament and have two individuals inside the top 10, including 2017 individual national champion Chandler Blanchet.
Rounding out the remainder of the top five was Florida Southern and Barry who ended Round Two in a tie for second. Lynn's 276 on the day nabbed them fourth place outright while Lincoln Memorial and Rollins College are deadlocked in fifth. Carson-Newman currently owns the seventh spot with a five over second-round score of 289.
Newberry's Tee Time for the final round is set for tomorrow, May 9th at 7:30 a.m.
