Gruenemeier jumps 22 spots in second day at South/Southeast Super Regional; In contention for national berth
May 7, 2013
HOWEY-in-the-HILLS, Fla. - Newberry College senior Chandler Gruenemeier shot an even par 72 in the second round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional tournament to jump into a tie for 13th place at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort's El Campeon Course on Tuesday.
The Jacksonville, Fla., native got the day started off right with an eagle on the first hole of the round, but a bogey on his third hole and double bogey on his seventh hole put him one over par at the turn. He birdied his 10th, 11th and 16th holes, but bogeys on his 17th and 18th holes put him at even par 72 for the day.
Despite his mildly disappointing finish, only six players in the 108-golfer field finished under par on Tuesday, putting Gruenemeier in 13th place, a jump of 22 spots up the leaderboard on "moving day".
The top seven teams in this tournament advance to nationals later this month, as well as the top two individuals not on those teams. Based on results after Monday's play, Gruenemeier is only one stroke off of that pace. He is five strokes back of the overall lead, as Nova Southeastern's Ricardo Celia and Ben Taylor are both three-under par.
Gruenemeier will attempt to extend his collegiate career starting off the first tee at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, grouped with Montevallo's Conner Godsey (+3) and Saint Leo's Nick Brothers (+1).
