Wolves wrap up NCAA South Regional in eighth place

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Newberry College women's golf team put the wraps on the 2012-13 season with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division II South Regional tournament, carding a three-day total of 320-316-318=954 (+90) at the Lone Palm Golf Club. The Wolves were led by seniors Julia Daneshfar and Lisa Brandl in the final day of action.
Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) carded a 5-over par 77 Tuesday, while Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) shot a 6-over par 78.
For the tournament, Brandl and Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) finished in a tie for 32nd place with a three-day total of 239 (+23), while Daneshfar was a stroke behind in a tie for 34th with a three-round total of 240 (+24). Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) finished in 45th place with a 31-over par 247 and Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) was in 46th place with a 34-over par 250.
The Wolves faced a tough challenge in the tournament, as only the top three teams qualified for nationals, with Lynn, Nova Southeastern and Barry earning the trip. Rollins' Annie Dulman won medalist honors with a 1-over par 217 for the event.
Newberry's appearance at the regional tournament was its fourth straight as a team and put the wraps on stellar careers for Daneshfar, Brandl and Castro. The trio finished their time at Newberry in the top five in career scoring average with Daneshfar finishing third with a 79.29 average, Castro finishing fourth with a 79.48 average and Brandl finishing fifth with a 79.69 average. The seniors are also the fifth, sixth and seventh players in the history of the South Atlantic Conference with finish with sub-80 career averages. Five of those seven players are from Newberry.
