HOWEY-in-the-HILLS, Fla. - Newberry College senior Chandler Gruenemeier shot a 2-over par 74 to sit in a tie for 35th place after the first round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional tournament at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort's El Campeon course Monday.
Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) is competing as an individual in the tournament, competing for one of only two individual spots in the NCAA National Tournament. The top two individuals not on one of the top seven teams after three rounds advances to nationals. He is only three strokes off the pace in a highly competitive field.
The senior was 1-over par on both the front and back nines with one birdie and two bogeys on the front. He then had two birdies and three bogeys on the back nine. He shot no worse than bogey in the round.
Nova Southeastern's Ricardo Celia leads the tournament at 3-under, with four golfers at 2-under. After Monday's round, 1-under would qualify an individual for nationals.
Gruenemeier tees off for his second round at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
