Deke Herrin hired as wide receivers coach

NEWBERRY - Newberry College head football coach Todd Knight has announced the hiring of Deke Herrin as the Wolves' wide receivers coach for the 2012 season.

Herrin comes to Newberry after four seasons as the passing game coordinator at Division III Birmingham-Southern College. In Herrin's final season with the Panthers, B-SC finished first in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in total offense, with quarterback Jimmy Stainback completing 60% of his passes. The Panthers went 20-19 in Herrin's four seasons in Birmingham.

Prior to Birmingham-Southern, Herrin coached outside linebackers at Presbyterian College after a season as a graduate assistant at Middle Tennessee State.

Herrin began his playing career as a walk-on wide receiver at Western Carolina in 1994 and working his way up to a scholarship player in 1995 and 1996. He completed his career at Clemson, and graduated from there with a degree in sports management in 1999.
