February 28, 2012
NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head football coach Todd Knight and vice president for intercollegiate athletics Brad Edwards are pleased to announce the Wolves' 2012 football schedule. The 2012 slate features 11 games with six contests at historic Setzler Field as the Wolves undertake their 98th season of intercollegiate football.
The Wolves open the season with four consecutive home games, starting on Saturday, September 1, against Elizabeth City State University at 6:30 p.m. The Vikings are coming off of an 8-4 season and were 6-1 in the CIAA North Division. ECSU was the fourth seed in the Super Region I bracket of the NCAA Division II playoffs last season, dropping a 44-0 decision to California (Pa.). Newberry is 1-0 all-time against the Vikings, with a 49-33 win in the 2006 playoff season.
Newberry continues its non-conference schedule on Saturday, September 8, as the scarlet and gray host the Hawks of Shorter University for the first time in program history. The Hawks are coming off of a 6-4 season in 2011, with a 3-3 record in the NAIA's Mid-South Conference West Division. Shorter is transitioning to Division II and is joining the Gulf South Conference.
South Atlantic Conference play begins on Saturday, September 15, as the Wolves host the Catawba Indians for the 75th all-time meeting between the schools. Catawba has a 37-34-3 lead in the series, with Newberry earning a 21-13 victory on the road in 2011. Newberry has won five of the last seven meetings.
The end of the four-game homestand comes on Saturday, September 22, when Newberry hosts Carson-Newman. This is the 47th meeting between the schools, with the Eagles holding a 28-19 lead in the series. Newberry had its best performance against C-N in the series history in 2011, pulling off a 24-3 win in Jefferson City, Tenn.
The first road test of the season comes on Saturday, September 29, when Newberry visits defending SAC co-champion Mars Hill College. The trip to the mountains of North Carolina will be the 42nd all-time meeting between the schools, with MHC leading the series 27-14. The Lions squeaked out a 23-21 win over the Wolves in 2011.
On Saturday, October 6, the Wolves stay on the road and pay a visit to the North Greenville Crusaders. Newberry has a 9-1 all-time record against NGU, but the Crusaders won the season opener by a 46-17 count in 2011. North Greenville was an NCAA Division II quarterfinalist last season and will be in its first season under new head coach Carroll McCray.
The Wolves return home on Saturday, October 13, to host the Wingate Bulldogs for the 23rd meeting between the institutions. Wingate has now won two straight in the series after a five-game Newberry winning streak, with the Bulldogs scratching out a 31-29 win in 2011.
Newberry hits the road to Tennessee on Saturday, October 20, for a matchup with the Tusculum Pioneers. Tusculum holds an 8-6 series lead going into the 15th meeting between the schools. This should be an exciting game once again, as Newberry eked out a 42-41 victory last year and seven of the last eight meetings have been decided by seven points or less.
The Wolves' final non-conference game comes on Saturday, October 27, when the scarlet and gray visit UNC Pembroke for the first time. The Braves won the first meeting between the schools by a 23-20 count in 2011 on the way to an 8-3 overall record.
The final home game of the season will be one of the biggest, as Newberry hosts Lutheran rivals and SAC co-champions Lenoir-Rhyne in the annual battle for the Bishops Trophy on Saturday, November 3. This is Newberry's longest running active rivalry game, as the schools meet up for the 79th time in a series dating back to 1923. L-R holds a 41-30-7 record in the series after snapping Newberry's five game winning streak with a 54-42 win in Hickory last year.
The regular season comes to a close on Saturday, November 9, when the Wolves visit Brevard College. This will be the seventh meeting between the schools, and the Wolves hold a 6-0 all-time record against the Tornados after a 42-24 win in the 2011 season finale.
