DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Fresh off the heels of its first victory of 2011, the Newberry women’s tennis squad couldn’t keep its momentum up on the road, falling by an 8-1 tally to the North Georgia Saints.
Despite the loss, sophomore Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) was able to push her win streak to two matches with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory against Matilda Watson win in the No. 4 singles match. The two match win streak by Hoover is the longest by a scarlet and gray netter so far this season.
The Wolves competed in the match with a lineup consisting of only four players, and had to surrender a trio of team points to the Saints at the onset of the match.
In doubles action, Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) dropped an 8-1 decision to Juliana Chiang and Audrey Marlette. The Wolves duo of Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) and Hoover played it close with the North Georgia pair of Jordan Poole and Watson at the beginning of the second doubles bout before falling by an 8-4 mark.
In the three remaining singles matches, Ziehe forced an extra game in the first set with Chiang, but ultimately fell to the Saint, 7-5, 6-1. McManus found herself on the wrong end of a 6-4, 6-1 outcome against Marlette and Simmons dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match with Poole in the No. 3 singles match.
The pack returns to the Palmetto State on Friday as they head to Gaffney to take on a second team of Saints, this time in the form of Limestone. The matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
