Newberry falls, 8-1, to Coker
Wolves score first doubles match win of 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College women’s tennis team could not navigate itself toward its first win of the season, falling 8-1 to the visiting Coker Cobras.
With the loss, the Wolves fall to 0-4 on the campaign while Coker improves to 1-0 this season.
Maria Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Shannon McManus (Summerville, S.C.) lost the opening doubles match to Stephanie Medley and Alyssa Blanchard by an 8-1 tally. Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) and LindsayKyzer (Saluda, S.C.) didn’t fare any better against Cora Berna and Kendall Sigmon, dropping an 8-4 battle.
The Wolves sole victory occurred in the final doubles match when Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) utilized a 7-5 tiebreaker to take a 9-8 decision from Faith Baxley and Brittany Yando.
The singles matches would spell doom for the scarlet gray though. Ziehe lost 6-1, 6-3 to Blanchard while McManus found herself on the wrong end of a 7-5, 6-2 tally against Berna.
Simmons was bested 6-0, 6-0 by Medley and Kyzer lost 6-2, 7-5 to Sigmon. Wrapping up the singles matches, Matthews lost 6-1, 6-1 to Baxley and Hoover dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Yando.
The pack returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 19) when they host the Falcons of Pfeiffer. The action is set to get underway at 2 p.m.
