Wolves suffer 9-0 setback in SAC opener against Anderson

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team started their conference play off on the wrong foot, falling 9-0 to Anderson at the Cannon Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves fall to 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play while the Trojans were able to pick up their first win as a member of the conference.
Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took her customary spot at No. 1 in singles play but fell to Camie Beaulieu-Brune 6-2, 7-5. The Saluda, S.C. trio of Amanda Simmons, Lindsay Kyzer and Stephanie Matthews would drop their matches by a similar 6-0, 6-0 score to Avery Owens, Julie Halbert and Lauren Trumbull respectively.
Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) lost by a 6-1, 6-0 tally to Shelby Anderson and the Trojans were able to pick up the final team point when Emily Weiland was victorious by default.
In doubles action the Ziehe and Simmons tandem played a tough match, but could not get past Beaulieu-Brune and Anderson who were victorious by an 8-4 score. Hoover and Matthews were shut out, 8-0, against Trumbull and Owens. The third Trojans doubles team of Marcela Gallegos and Halbert won by default.
The Wolves will go for their first win of 2011 when they host Coker on February 17. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
