FORT MYERS, FLA. - Newberry freshman tennis players Lauren Hartley and Isabel Kredler are 2-0 in doubles play after two rounds at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Doubles Championships administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and held on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University.
The duo held off a tough Foelgner-Colby team from host FGCU 8-6, then ran past Saint Leo's Nikolovska and Leitch in an 8-2 affair. SLU was one of nine teams to draw a bye in the first round to advance to play Newberry.
Hartley-Kredler face Barry's tandem of Zuleta and Troutman, 8-1 winners over another FGCU team after receiving a first-round bye themselves. Winning tomorrow's first match would place them in the regional championship match.
Newberry's Chanelle Clare earned the sole singles win for the Scarlet and Gray, 6-1, 6-2 over FGCU's Kristin Foelgner, before bowing out in the second round.
The threat of hurricane weather looms over the remainder of the tournament. Matches may be postponed or canceled depending on the weather.
