Newberry comes up short against No. 29 Augusta State, 8-1

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Newberry College women’s tennis team took on the No. 29 ranked Augusta State Jaguars on Tuesday afternoon but proved unable to pull out the win, falling by an 8-1 margin.
Newberry moves to 1-14 on the season. Augusta State, who entered the match ranked No. 29 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings and No. 5 in the Southeast Region, improves to 13-7.
In singles play, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) earned a win against Victoria Lundqvist. Mortimer led 5-4 before Lundqvist retired to give Mortimer the victory. In other singles matches, Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Marina Ferreria, 6-0, 6-0, while Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Bianca Machado, 6-0, 6-0. Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) both came up short by 6-0, 6-0 margins to Camila Correa and Luiza Pires, respectively. Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) also lost to Keaton Sanders, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action, Mortimer and Simmons lost to Ferreria and Machado, 8-0, while Crouch and Matthews dropped a match to Lindqvist and Sanders, 8-0. In the team’s final doubles match, Hoover and Kyzer fell to Correa and Farrell, 8-1.
Newberry returns home for its final match of the season, a test against Converse College on Wednesday, April 13. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
