Newberry drops match to Mars Hill, 6-3

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Newberry College women’s tennis team took to the courts for the third time in four days on Monday for a match against Mars Hill but could not top the Lions, 6-3.
Newberry moves to 1-13 overall and finishes the South Atlantic Conference portion of its schedule at 0-8. Mars Hill improves to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in SAC play.
The scarlet and gray took two singles matches from Mars Hill on the day. Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) split the first two sets with Jordan Dockery, 2-6, 6-1, before outlasting the Lion in a close third set, 11-9. Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) also beat Miranda Reasoner, 6-0, 6-1. In other singles matches, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) fell to Erika Pinate, 6-2, 6-0, while Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match to Patricia La Rovere, 6-0, 6-0. Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) also lost to Ona Jane, 6-0, 6-0, and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Paola Aybar Jimenez, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, Hoover and Kyzer earned two more wins on the day with a doubles victory over Dockery and Reasoner, 8-1. The team of Mortimer and Matthews fell to Pinate and Jane, 8-1, and Simmons and Crouch dropped a match to La Rovere and Aybar Jimenez, 8-1.
Newberry returns to action tomorrow in a road match in Augusta, Ga., against Augusta State. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
