Newberry comes up short against Lenoir-Rhyne, 8-1

HICKORY, N.C. – The Newberry College women’s team saw Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) win her seventh singles match of the season but unfortunately the squad fell to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, 8-1.
Newberry moves to 1-11 overall with the loss and 0-6 in South Atlantic Conference play. L-R earned its first win of the season with the victory and now stands at 1-13 overall and 1-6 in the SAC.
Autise Mortimer picked up her seventh singles win of the season at the first flight in her match against Kelsey Love. Mortimer knocked off the Bear with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory to improve her singles record to 7-5 on the year. In other singles matches, Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Ivey Tant, 6-4, 6-0, and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) both fell by 6-1, 6-0 scores to Cathryn Jarrett and Bekah Rhoney, respectively. Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) also dropped a match to Mariel Mena, 6-1, 6-1, and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) came up short against Lizzie Warlick, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, the duo of Mortimer and Matthews fell to Rhoney and Tant, 8-3, while Simmons and Kyzer dropped a match to Love and Mena, 8-1. Crouch and Hoover put up a spirited fight for Newberry but ultimately came out on the losing end, 8-4.
Newberry returns home for its next match, a SAC contest against Tusculum on Saturday, April 10. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
