Newberry falls in road contest to Catawba, 8-1

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College women’s tennis team fell to the Catawba College Catawba Indians on Saturday afternoon, 8-1.
Newberry (1-6, 0-2 SAC) took one singles match from Catawba (6-6, 2-1 SAC) but could not find more, leaving the scarlet and gray looking for the team’s first South Atlantic Conference win.
Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) won her second straight singles match with a 6-1, 7-5 first-flight victory over Kasia Zielinski. Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) almost took a set from Vanessa Silva but fell, 6-1, 7-5, and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Steffi Cook, 6-0, 6-0. In other Newberry singles action, Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match to Candace Hall, 6-1, 6-1, Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) was defeated by Maggie McKee, 6-0, 6-0, and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) came up short against Jennifer Dameron, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, Matthews and Mortimer narrowly lost to Zielinski and Silva, 8-6; Crouch and Simmons fell to Hall and Cook, 8-0; and Kyzer and Hoover dropped a match to McKee and Dameron, 8-0.
Newberry’s next match will find the scarlet and gray at home in Lancaster, S.C., for an exhibition match on Wednesday, March 17. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
