Newberry comes up short against Pfeiffer, 8-1

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry College women’s team took a break from conference play for a road test against the Pfeiffer Falcons on Friday afternoon, but the scarlet and gray fell short despite taking the first-flight singles match, 8-1.
Newberry drops to 1-5 on the season and stays at 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Pfeiffer improves to 4-0.
Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) picked up her third singles win of the season with a first-flight victory over Alena Krutkina, 6-4, 6-2. Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Patty Dominguez, 6-0, 6-0, and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) lost a hard-fought contest to Maddy Billeter, 6-3, 6-4. In the rest of Newberry’s singles matches, Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) came up short against Catie Thomas, 6-0, 6-0, Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Jonnell Carpenter, 6-0, 6-0, and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) was defeated by Chelsi Haefele, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Mortimer and Matthews lost to Krutkina and Dominguez, 8-3; Crouch and Simmons narrowly fell to Billeter and Carpenter, 8-6; and Kyzer and Hoover dropped a match to Thomas and Haefele, 8-1.
Newberry returns into SAC action with a match at Catawba College on Saturday, March 6. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
