Women's tennis falls to Brevard in SAC opener, 9-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team fell to Brevard College in its South Atlantic Conference opener, 9-0, at the Cannon Courts on Saturday.
Newberry falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in SAC play, while Brevard is now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in SAC action.
In singles action, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) fell in three sets to Lindsay Shaeffer (Perrysburg, Ohio), 0-6, 6-3, 5-7. Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Lindsay Hostetter (Livonia, Mich.), 6-4, 6-3, while Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) and Lindsay Kyzer each lost by 6-0, 6-0, scores to Kayley Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Kim Dixon (Charlotte, N.C.), respectively. Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a hard-fought match with Sara Douglas (Houston, Texas), 6-3, 7-5, while Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) fell to Jennifer Nyman (Morganton, N.C.), 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Mortimer and Simmons fell to Shaeffer and Dixon, 8-2; Crouch and Matthews lost to Hostetter and Duval, 8-0; and Kyzer and Hoover lost to Elise Labus (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Merek Slagle (Hendersonville, N.C.), 8-0.
Newberry returns to action next week with a pair of matches in North Carolina. The scarlet and gray will face off against Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m. Friday in Misenheimer, N.C. The next day, Newberry plays a SAC match against Catawba in Salisbury, N.C., at 2 p.m.
